Wall stickers for Inpatient Psychiatry: A small gesture that sends a big message

Many people pray to help with anxiety, fear, or sadness. “People experiencing a mental illness can feel isolated and lonely. Faith can be a source of strength. So how do we help facilitate that?” said Megen Boysen, Senior Director of Psychiatry Service.
Muslims pray five times a day, facing in the direction of the Muslim holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. When patients are in an unfamiliar place, it can be distressing not knowing which direction to pray.
A couple of years ago, the qibla or “direction” stickers were placed in each of our Emergency Department patient rooms. The stickers point in the direction of Mecca. In September, Imam Sharif Mohamed, co-founder of Open Path Resources and Somali Cultural Navigator, Mohamed Mohamed, helped place qibla stickers in Inpatient Psychiatry.
